CALIFORNIA PRUNE ‘HANGOVER’ SMOOTHIE

One of the main causes of a hangover is dehydration (alcohol is a diuretic) and the impurities in many alcoholic drinks can leave you feeling rough...

So re-hydration is key and if you have a delicate tummy then a simple smoothie to sip during the morning is a good option. It’s also vital to help your body recover from potentially a long period with little real food by providing a gradual energy boost and replacing lost nutrients and electrolytes (especially if you have vomited!).

This energy-boosting, thirst quenching smoothie is a safe bet to help any hangover. It contains prune juice (a source of potassium; iron, manganese and vitamin B6) - all of which are nutrients that can be helpful for coping with that dreaded ‘morning after the night before’ feeling.

Here’s how it works:

Vitamin B6 and iron contribute to reducing tiredness and fatigue, whilst potassium helps normal muscle function. Vitamin B6, manganese and iron contribute to normal energy-yielding metabolism; and manganese helps protect cells from oxidative stress.

Ingredients: (for one person)

 One large banana

 150ml California Prune Juice

 150ml whole milk

 100g fresh, frozen or tinned berry fruits e.g. blueberries, raspberries, blackcurrants or mixed berries

 1tsp wheatgerm

 1 heaped tbsp smooth peanut butter, salted

 Optional: ½ tsp borage

Just blend together all the ingredients.

Pour half into a glass and store the rest in the refrigerator for later.
