TV Chef Paul Merrett recently visited Action for Children’s Parklands Campus in Abingdon, Oxfordshire, as part of a campaign by TOTAL Greek Yoghurt, to encourage children and their families to take more of an interest in what they are eating.
TOTAL has provided funding for the school to develop a large allotment space which will allow pupils to grow, produce and prepare their own food, learning valuable skills for life.
Parklands Campus School currently supports 23 young people all of whom have behavioural, emotional, or social difficulties. The school opened its doors in September 2011 and is rapidly establishing an exciting and varied curriculum to engage and challenge pupils who have not been able to learn in mainstream settings.
TOTAL has sponsored the allotment so that they can develop the space as a demonstration garden for interested pupils. The garden is designed to show important principles such as crop rotation and seasonality. Pupils also have their own individually allocated raised beds where they are free to grow the foods they especially are keen to eat!
Paul visited the school to help create tasty dishes out of some of the produce that the pupils will be growing in their allotment, and provided an interesting a master class for the pupils, who already attend Ready, Steady, Cook classes with their teacher Richard Collier.
A representative at TOTAL Greek Yoghurt said; “We feel that by helping youngsters understand the process of food and learn about new ingredients, we can harness their enthusiasm and natural curiosity for food, therefore widening their choices. It’s imperative for families to understand that by making healthier food choices, doesn’t mean that you need to compromise on taste. We are also keen to promote Action for Children’s vital work with vulnerable and neglected children and families across the country.
TV Chef Paul Merrett has created six fun but varied family recipes during his time at Parklands, each of which has championed at least one particular fruit, vegetable or herb and will raise awareness of both the healthy qualities and versatility of Greek Yoghurt.
